On Saturday, Mariana and I went down to REI to get her a bike. The Saratoga store was out of stock for the model she wanted, so we headed up to San Carlos. With only minutes to spare before closing time we managed to purchase a Green Novara Aspen, a Thule roof rack system for Mariana's Highlander and a handful of other stuff.
After a quick stop at the Saratoga store the next morning for a few adjustments on the new rig and a new tube for me, we were off for a great adventure.
We went on a 23 mile journey that took us across the Golden Gate Bridge, through Sausalito to Tiburon. From there, we took the ferry across the bay and rode from Pier 41 back to where we parked. I must say that it was utterly glorious. After we made our way across the bridge the weather cleared up. During the last leg of the ride I had to actually get down to shorts and a short sleeved jersey.
This trip also afforded me my first opportunity to use my new Mountain Hardware Vertex soft shell. It kept me comfortable the whole time. Hard peddling through blow-you-over winds gets you stuck in one heck of a catch 22. The wind was trying to strip ever last bit of heat from me, but I was sweating like a pig. The soft shell kept the wind out and was breathable enough that I hardly noticed the sweat. Oh, and I got it at REI for 75% off. Woot!Posted by wschuller at September 5, 2005 03:45 PM
